Rural Context
Falmouth, Maine
The goal was to create a harmonious relationship between the house and surrounding horse pasture, enhancing the property's existing old farmhouse beauty, while also providing plenty of outside living space.
This was achieved with a palette of traditional ornamental plantings around the house, informal field-stone walls and hedges around the yard for domestic scale and enclosure, an arbor, and a pergola over a flagstone patio. Many old foundation stones were salvaged and reused throughout the project.
A network of stepping stone paths connects these outdoor spaces, and an orchard supplies fruit while also lending agrarian order and a transitional connection between the house and horse barn.
Pergola, arbor & trellis built by Dave Rogers of Rogers & Co.; Hardscaping (except pre-existing cobble paving) installed by Peter Bloom & Josh Edlund of Three Stone Landscape.
