Town Pocket
West End, Portland Maine
Tucked behind an Arts & Crafts home in Portland's West End, this tiny space already had the advantage of enclosure, but lacking a sense of place, it didn't invite you to stay there.
The garden now consists of a small oval lawn edged with square cobblestones and surrounded by small flowering shrubs, perennials & bulbs. Small trees were planted to buffer adjacent buildings looming overhead, and also to provide dappled protection from the hot afternoon sun. Climbing Hydrangeas will eventually conceal the stockade fence.
Window boxes and Rose trellises adorn the garage, and a straight asphalt path was replaced with a curved brick path, set in a basket weave pattern, and edged w/square cobbles.
Bluestone pavers were used to replace the asphalt that previously covered the existing raised terrace.
The growing season begins each year in early May with a burst of cheerful flowering bulbs.
