Urban Patch
Munjoy Hill, Portland Maine *2006 Hidden Gardens Tour*
This tiny backyard patio garden is an example of what can be done to reclaim living space from a parking lot (see Before/After gallery) - the original goal being simply to provide space for a picnic table.
Being surrounded by a disproportionate amount of paving, vehicles and brick, and exposed to wind, neighboring windows and full sun for most of the day, it became apparent that the space would need to provide some enclosure if it were to be enjoyed. An inexpensive stockade fence was erected along the property line to provide some immediate relief. Then the planting beds were created, carved right out of the existing compacted gravel, which also served as a base for the slate patio & pathway. A mixture of loam and compost was then used to fill the beds and sculpt them well above the surrounding hard surfaces.
Over time, a tapestry of small trees, shrubs, and perennials were planted and nurtured for their delicate beauty and the leafy enclosure they provide. It has also become an oasis for birds and pollinating insects.
